Strengths of All Parts
Many of us on the healing journey may find great benefit from participating in 12-step programs and communities. Our attach parts may immediately feel the healing energy of stepping into the loving and healing energy of a group. Sharing a physical and emotional space with others that deeply understand the struggle of some of our parts can be immensely transformative.
And yet, other parts may feel triggered by some of the language used in groups and program literature. Furthermore, we may witness our parts struggle with both welcoming the support of a sponsor while simultaneously feeling flooded by the cacophony of protector parts that react to the intimacy and vulnerability inherent in this type of relationship. Freeze may show up in the form of confusion to question, "Have I been fooling the rest of my parts the whole time by trying to convince them that they make sense when in fact this is a character defect?" Submit may show up in the form of shame, "I'm doing this wrong... maybe i'm being resistant...".
In the midst of this dilemma we may find ourselves asking, "Do i need to choose between a parts-framework and a 12-step program?".
Derek Scott integrates an understanding of a parts framework and the 12-steps in a beautiful piece written to address this exact question. The download is available below!
